Ria17-11-0912/10/09 - Down & Out

This wee baby lurcher was found and taken in by a caring couple who found her near their home in the Corofin/Ennistymon area, after ringing around people in their area and not finding her owner they contacted us. The poor pet was only around 8wks old and was suffering with mange. We brought her to our vet who took skin scrapings from her and gave us a mange wash to put on her to try to make her more comfortable.

The photo, which does her no justice, shows Ria, as she is now named, just over a month after arriving to us and as you can see she is well on the road to recovery with the hair regrowing nicely on her face, head and legs ... she has also at least doubled in size since coming to us.

We do not know where she came from or why she was allowed to get into the state she was found in but what we do know is that once she is in full health we will ensure that she finds a home filled with love and comfort where she will never need to pray for strangers to find or help her again.

21/05/09 - Complete Case Of Neglect

oesmale21-5-09b

This poor boy was just tied to the gate of the pound outside it’s opening hours and there is no doubt

by both the sight and smell of him that he has gone through a long time of neglect and discomfort.

Did You Know That A Dog’s Sense Of Smell Is Far Greater Than Ours ???

Believe me when I say that I drove the whole way home with him on the back seat with my windows

fully down so as to try to reduce some of the odour emanating from his hair ... Can you imagine

having to live with that smell and dirt on yourself everyday and not being able to do anything about it??

His hair is so matted that his ribs, his spine, his hips, etc cannot be felt, his whole coat will have to be

shaved off before we will be able to see if he has any sores from the very tight mats all over him.

His hair will be removed tomorrow but for this evening he has had a big run around the

field and been given a nice dinner and a comfy bed which should satisfy his needs until then.

27/05/09 - Old English Sheepdog Update

“Toby” (we think this was his name so are sticking with it) had to go to the vets to be sedated as a result of the

matted hair being so close to his skin and the distress that he was in when we attempted to clip him ourselves.

TOBYOESMIDGROOMresize

TOBYOESbeginGROOMresize
There is no excuse for allowing a dog's hair to get into this state

Please Note - Toby is not under the hair in the above photo ...

it had to be removed in one 'layer' due to the depth of the mats

 oesmaleskinsoreneck1 oesmaleskinsore2

See how handsome I look now

oesmaleface23-5-09 oesmaleshake23-5-09

Toby’s ears are very infected and have to be cleaned and treated daily for the next fortnight or so, doing this is no easy task as he is not used to having it done and gets upsets and jumpy so whomever adopts this boy once he is ready for rehoming is going to have to start teaching him reassuringly that grooming, cleaning, etc are for his own benefit and that he need not get upset or stressed everytime he needs attention.

The vet said that Toby has diminished sight in his left eye (blue colour) and she does not feel this will improve so this will be another factor for anyone considering adopting him when his time comes eventhough he should still have plenty of sight to lead a ‘normal’ life.

16/03/09 - Left At The Side Of The Road

Lolawhippetlurcher16-3-09

Lola is a Whippet Lurcher pup who is approx 6mths old. She was found at the side of a road by a very kind

lady who brought her to the nearest vet where she was treated for mange and then brought to her home where she

was given regular dinners to help her put on some needed weight and lots of tlc. The lady was in the middle of moving house but

still took good care of her for a week to give her a headstart on her road to recovery before asking us to take her into our care.

Little Lola is a happy little pup who had an undeserved bad start in life but thanks to the kind actions of a member of the public

she is now at least getting a chance to see that not all people are as uncaring and selfish in the way they treat animals as her

previous owner was. Mange is a treatable condition, there is no excuse for animals being left with sore itchy skin which can

develop into infections and open sores. Advocate treats mange and only costs approx €10.00 per month for 3 months,

it comes in the same format as Frontline & Stronghold so you merely put it between the dog’s shoulder blades just once

each month ......... no big deal but sadly to some people even that little bit of attention and expense is too much bother.

UPDATE ON LOLA - 17TH OF APRIL 2009

Only a few days into Lola being in our care she had to spend 24hrs on a drip in the vets due to her temperature rising to 105 and her becoming dehydrated rapidly as a result. Thanks to this illness the poor wee girl lost most of the weight she had gained and so we were back to square one with trying to build her body weight up. A week later following a course of antibiotics we thought she was well on the road to recovery until one morning her skin appeared very red again indicating that her temperature was rising high and so back to the vets with her. Luckily this time she did not require a drip but further blood tests were carried out and the results showed that she was still carrying an infection so a more aggressive round of antibiotics for a 2wk period were prescribed in an effort to eliminate the source of the infection without having to run a series of more aggressive tests which it was felt would be too much for her tired sore young body. During this past week one of Lola’s glands has been noticeably increasing and decreasing and so on Monday the 20th of April she will have this gland assessed to see if it could be the cause of the infection that is showing up in her bloods and if so she will require an operation to have it removed. Thankfully she has regained the lost weight and is much stronger both physically and mentally so hopefully if the operation is deemed necessary it won’t have any ill effects on her.

Please keep your fingers and toes crossed for this wee lass who is so full of love for people despite the way she was mistreated in the past.

UPDATE ON LOLA - 21st OF APRIL 2009

Our poor young girl came back from the vets this evening with lots of stitches on her neck from where the ‘lump’ was removed and also two stitches on her right side from where a skin biopsy was taken. The results from these will not be back from the lab for 10 working days, in the meantime we have to continue giving her the antibiotics and anti-inflamatories.

As always Lola is being the perfect patient and is becoming much more puppy like in her behaviour, she has a great love now for tennis balls and teddy bears and her playfulness with other dogs is great to see as it lets us know that whereby her physical health recovery time is proving slow and complex her mental health is strengthening every day.

UPDATE ON LOLA 24TH OF MAY 09

lolagrassrolling30-5-09

Much to our relief Lola’s neck biopsy came back clear but all her other skin biopsies showed that her system is still fighting the demodex mange that she had when she arrived into us and so she has been prescribed a two month course of oral Ivomectin. Demodex mange is not contagious, it is brought on by stress, bad immune system due to lack of food, neglect, cruelty, etc and so our vet has said there is no reason why Lola cannot now be made available for adoption on the condition that her new owners continue her medication to the end of it’s course. As you can see from Lola’s new photo she is a much happier, outgoing and playful girl.

UPDATE ON LOLA 13TH OF JUNE 09

Lola is heading off to start the next chapter of her life ........ today she is leaving Ireland and heading over to Jenny with Southern Lurcher Rescue in the UK who have been following her story closely over the past few months. Jenny & Barney of SLR have previously gotten superb homes for ‘Small-Man’ and Lily for us. Hopefully we will have a story and photos to put on our ‘Happy Endings’ page soon.

5/11/08 - Surplus To Requirements

Two Cocker Spaniels found who clearly made lots of money for their ‘owners’

were dumped in the cold weather Halloween week in the South-East Clare area.

 blackcockerbblackcockerundershot

The two girls were brought to our vets and upon weighing were found to be only half their proper body weight,

at 8kgs & 9kgs and they were also full of lice. They have a lot of recovering to do before they will be able

to go to loving warm homes as they need to gain several kilos in weight before they can even be spayed.

Mentally they have lots of healing needed too as they are very timid and unsure of themselves.

We will help them to form a trust in humans and teach them what unconditional love is.

 goldencockeragoldencockertiredsunkenface

These girls are further proof of the neglect that is suffered by hundreds of dogs all around Ireland in order

to ‘line the pockets’ of their owners. If you or someone you know is intending to buy a puppy please ensure that

at least his/her mother is seen and if you feel that the conditions or dogs are unhealthy/substandard

then PLEASE contact the nearest rescue/ISPCA centre and report your findings/concerns.

The more pups that are bought from unscrupulous breeders the more dogs they will breed as all the money

they make is undeclared and therefore TAX FREE, they can easily afford to look after their dogs properly

and provide them with proper living conditions, medical care, food, etc, etc.

In the year 2008 there is no excuse for what these two cockers have been through,

YOU can help to STOP this happening to the hundreds of others.

“Special Needs Puppy”

This little 10wk old puppy was dropped to our vet’s clinic ......... isn’t he a picture of health & cuteness

leftfullearmaleretrievercrosspup11-08

................ now take a closer look ........... do you notice anything unusual or different???

(not his eye colour as that is just from the flash of the camera)

fullfaceviewearholelessmalepup11-08

This little lad has only one and a half ears and upon our closer inspection we discovered that this

was not actually his biggest ‘oddity’ because unfortunately for him he had also been born without any ear-holes.

Preliminary tests to see whether he could hear or if he was totally deaf proved inconclusive and so it was deemed

that he would need specialist tests and possibly treatment if necessary. We brought him to our kennels in order

to decide what the next step for him should be and it was felt that it would be in his best interests to leave our care

and travel to a rescue in the UK that has had great successes in the past with ‘special needs’ youngsters.

Once he had his vaccination and completed his quarantine time with us the travel arrangements were put in place

and on the 11th of November he left the Irish shores much like many emigrants ‘in hope of good things to come’.

We have no doubt that this boy will be very loved and happy

and we wish him every success in whatever life’s journey has in store for him.

Jack Russell Puppy Found In A Box

16th of October and an obviously ‘unwanted’ puppy arrived into our care after being found

in a cardboard box at the end of a laneway by a kind member of the public who brought her home and

gave her a much needed bath and feed prior to contacting us in order for her to come into our care.

At only approx 10wks of age someone had already grown sick and tired of this little bundle of fun and friendship.

 sophie15-10-08b

After 3wks, once Sophie had recovered from her ordeal, had been wormed, microchipped and vaccinated

she went off to her new home in Co Dublin. The lastest news was that as expected she had settled in

very well with her new family and that she was happily getting to know her new doggie friends.

Littlest Lily Our 11th of October Newcomer

Lily is only approx 4wks old in these photos and was taken into our care after being seen for sale at a fair ;o((

lilyfairpupalilyfairpupb

Lily, thought to be a whippet x terrier, wasn’t much more than a little bag of bones upon arriving

and she had a ‘nice’ musty mange smell. We brought her to our vet the day after her arrival where she was treated

for her mange and given a steroid and antibiotic injection to help boost her little system.

It is a long time since we had such a young puppy without it’s mother in our care and even longer since

getting one in such a frail body condition. We hope she didn’t have any sibblings sold prior to her being spotted

or if she had that they went to homes where they will receive lots of loving care and nourishment.

We hope in a few weeks that we will be able to put this sweet baby up for rehoming.

Thankfully her skin sores are not too bad and so her hair should all grow back where they were.

Little Lily surely deserved a much better start in life than the one she got,

it amazes us the condition some animals are brought to fairs/sales in,

obviously not everyone has morals or worries about what animal lovers / carers think of them.

August 2008 Sammy Left To Fend For Himself

sammysamoyed1

Sammy, a samoyed, of approx 2-3yrs old was wandering from door to door looking for any scraps of food people might have lying around outside in order for him to survive.

Thankfully someone realised he did not belong to anyone in the area and that he had no home or owner looking after him and brought him to our vets who contacted us.

Poor Sammy was very underweight, with his spine and ribs easily felt under his thick coat of hair.

Someone must have loved him once as he will sit when he is asked nicely. No one ever came forward to claim Sammy.

28th June 2008 - Ten Pups Left Behind Like Rubbish

3femalelurcherpupsblacklurcherpupfemale1

10 Lurcher puppies got left behind when their ‘owners’ moved away, they arrived to us skinny, smelly and very tired.

The pups quite obviously were not all from the same litter due to the size differences and the development stages they were at.

The sheer lack of ‘owner responsibility’ will never cease to amaze us ....... there is no reason for these pups to have been abandoned the way the were. Thankfully a ‘neighbour’ cared enough to alert us to their plight before the situation got even worse. It will be a few weeks before these pups will be up to healthy weights but we will ensure that they get there by hook or by crook.

bluelurcherpupfemale2

Two of the pups (left photo shows one) were particularly bad and had to be brought inside for extra treatment. They will no doubt not be ready for rehoming for several weeks due to their lack of development from sheer malnourishment and poor breeding which has led to teeth problems which is affecting their ability to eat.

The Dogs Trust have been operating a Neutering Scheme in Ireland for well over a year, there is no excuse anymore for ‘accidental’ breeding between siblings. Why allow mating to take place if you do not want the ‘bother’ of puppies .......... there is a reason why rescues are always encouraging people to spay/neuter their dogs .... these 10 innocent puppies were left to suffer in silence because their mother was not worth spending the €20.00 on that it costs for a spay under the Dogs Trust Neutering Scheme before she ever came into season.

A Few of The ‘Dumped’ Dogs That Came Into Us From March to May 2008

tinkerbellfront1daisymarkingslucylurcher3

As always we thank the kind, caring members of the public who took these ‘dumped’ dogs off the dangerous roads, fed and looked after them and for taking the time to contact us to alert us to their existence and helping us with transport to get them into our care.

5th February 2008 - No Words ........... No Excuses

On the 5th of February Phoenix entered our care following a phone call from the Clare Dog Warden who wanted him to have a chance

phoenixlftsidephoenix2Phoenix was only 3yrs old and much to our horror his racing records showed that his last race was the second last week of December so he had been allowed to get into this condition in just 5weeks. The cuts on his legs are as a result of sleeping on a hard unsanitary surface and due to the depth of the ones on his back knees we were afraid an infection could easily get at his bones so we brought him to our vets who did a super job stitching the wounds to pull them in and make them smaller. He was also given antibiotics and weighed in at a very poor 21kgs (his racing weight in December had been 33kgs). Without a doubt Phoenix had a very long recovery road ahead of him but his gentle nature and his sheer gratitude for the love being given to him made the journey feel less cumbersome all round.

phoenix15-5-08b

By the 15th of May Phoenix’s weight was getting closer to his racing weight and he had regained his interest in life. We were absolutely delighted with his progress and it was clear from his wagging tail that so too was he.

He was now finally able to be neutered, microchipped and vaccinated which meant that he was about to become ‘fit for rehoming’. We were fairly certain that almost immediately upon putting him up for adoption he would get reserved as our brilliant Italian friends in the European Greyhound Network had been keeping tabs on him and two of their members, Francesca & Dario, had even come to visit him in April. They were already receiving enquiries from different parts of Italy asking if he was up for adoption yet.

Phoenixwithnewitalianownerscroppedphoenix&aaron06-08

On the 24th of June the preparations were going full blast as we were marking the final paperwork for Phoenix’s departure to his new home in Italy. He had his final check-up with our vets to ensure that he was ‘fit for travel’ and we were delighted to say that not only was his weight back up to what it had been when he last raced but he was now even healthier at 34.5kgs .....

I think you will agree that handsome doesn’t even begin to describe him.

_____________

7yrolda

Bertie .......... what can you say, there is no excuse for this ........

According to this boys ear tattoos he is 7yrs old, and judging by his body condition he spent a lot of those years living in misery. Upon arrival his medical conditions were noted by the vet as:

(a) Mange - not nice but very easily treated

(b) Severe Dehydration - Disgraceful, dogs need constant access to drinking water

(c) Shortened Leg Muscle/Ligaments - confined to small space for lengthy period of time

(d) Emaciated & No Body Muscle - lack of food & nourishment

7yrolde

It will be a slow road to recovery for the middle aged boy who looks & moves more like a 14/15yr old. Due to his shortened rear leg ligaments/tendons he walks with his legs bent and turned out. He has to have his front legs washed down due to the fact that each time he relieves his kidneys he wets himself as a result of his bandy back legs.

The first time he saw a bucket of water he drank so much that he bloated himself and when he got his first meal here he ate it so fast that he got sick due to not chewing properly.

It is cases like this that annoy us most as Bertie has no medical reasons for being in such a horrible state ................ when will people treat these noble creatures with the care and respect they deserve.

bertie26-10

UPDATE 28/10/07: Bertie finally was passed strong enough to be neutered on Thursday and thankfully all went well during and after the procedure. He has had to have steroid injections to help his hips/lower back and also has to have physiotherapy everyday in an effort to encourage his tendons/muscles/ligaments to elongate and loosen in an effort to straighten his back legs. Mentally he has made great advances and has discovered the pleasure of living with humans and sleeping on a couch.

UPDATE 15/01/08: Bertie is now well enough to join our other dogs on the waiting list. If you would be interested in adopting our special boy please feel free to contact us.

Update 7/5/08: Bertie went off to his new home today ... he will be sorely missed

but it is lovely to know that he is comfy & loved in a home of his own
